Before calibrating and creating monitor profiles for accurate color display, there are a number of 'pre-flight' checks that you must do to ensure that the results you get are the best.

Uniformity assessment: It is not feasible to try a display profile if it significantly fades in corners or has localized colors, because the rating you make will be affected by this. A quick way to test visual uniformity is to set a neutral gray desktop pattern and close all windows. Old-style CRT displays usually have controls that allow you to adjust the screen's inconsistent display and various other screen geometry errors, but there's nothing you can do about a broken LCD panel; Be aware that LCD manufacturers determine tolerance for uniformity and broken pixels.

Clean the screen and position the measuring device: the LCD panel does not attract dust like a statically charged CRT, but it still settles there, and fingerprints will not help your calibration efforts too.
